Advanced Characterization of Bituminous Binders: Comparing Industrial and Paving-Grade Bituminous Binders

نویسندگان

چکیده

This paper deals with the fundamental differences between industrial and paving-grade bituminous binders. The is presented in two main sections: 1) a review of materials’ colloidal structure required properties for paving applications; 2) wide range experimental tests which binders were studied compared. In this research, 160/220 bitumen was compared to same penetration lower penetration, 70/100 one. research consisted physical, chemical, thermal, microstructural, rheological analysis provide comprehensive understanding these diverse applications. Overall, comparison tests’ results indicated that while asphaltene content its characteristics have great influence on bitumen’s properties, it not only factor. During study chemical structures via Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), found Peri phase (attributed resins) also plays an important role, defining physical visco-elastic properties. fact, from microstructural point view using AFM significant difference notified ones. These allow bitumens be more elastic ductile bitumen.

Characterization of Glass Transition Temperature and Surface Energy of Bituminous Binders by Inverse Gas Chromatography

Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) was used to characterize two bituminous binders (A and B) of different origin. Glass transition temperatures (Tg) were determined by constructing van’t Hoff plots using n-pentane probes in a temperature range between -50 °C and +120 °C. Tg values were specified using the first deviations from linearity observed in the adsorption zone of the plots. A 6 °C differe...

Recycling of Bituminous Pavements

IN T R O D U C T IO N The major material utilized in the construction of the roads, streets and highways of this country is asphalt. Of the nation’s 3.84 million miles of roads, 1.86 million are paved, hard-surfaced structures. 1.74 million or 94% of these paved roads are constructed of asphalt (Fig. 1). Likewise, within the state of Indiana, 83% or about 9300 miles of the 11,200 miles under th...

On Bituminous Mix Design

Bituminous mix design is a delicate balancing act among the proportions of various aggregate sizes and bitumen content. For a given aggregate gradation, the optimum bitumen content is estimated by satisfying a number of mix design parameters. This article briefly discusses the current approaches in bituminous mix design and singles out the issues involved.

Influence of Setting Time of Tack Coat on Bond Strength of Bituminous Paving Layers

Poor adhesion between two successive bituminous layers causes adverse effects on the structural strength of the pavement and develops a numbers of premature failure. To improve the adhesion, it is a general practice to apply a tack coat over an existing or newly constructed bituminous surface before laying another bituminous layer. The main objective of this study is to explore the influence of...

Bituminous pavement recycling

The bituminous pavement rehabilitation alternatives are mainly overlaying, recycling and reconstruction. In the recycling process the material from deteriorated pavement, known as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), is partially or fully reused in fresh construction. Some of the advantages associated with pavement recycling are (i) less user delay (ii) conservation of energy (iii) preservation of...
